About This Safety Initiative

Driving Toward Safer Roads: Harness the power of near-miss data to improve trailer safety and prevent rollover incidents.

Driving Heavy Vehicle Safety Forward

This Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative is proudly led by the National Bulk Tanker Association (NBTA) and its participating members.

Supported by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator's (NHVR) Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI) program and funded by the Australian Government, this project reflects a shared commitment to creating safer roads for the heavy vehicle industry and all road users.

Our Aim

The goal of this initiative is simple but critical: to prevent heavy vehicle rollovers and save lives.

By leveraging cutting-edge technology and industry collaboration, we are working to identify and address the root causes of rollovers before they happen, ensuring a safer and more efficient heavy vehicle transport system.

The Problem We’re Tackling

Heavy vehicle rollovers remain one of the most significant safety challenges in the transport industry. Despite advancements in vehicle safety technology, rollovers continue to claim lives and cause substantial financial and social costs. The annual crash reports in Australia provide little to no insight into the prevalence, causes, or specific locations of these incidents.

Furthermore, the current approach to addressing rollovers is largely reactionary—investigations begin only after an event has occurred. This approach is too late. We need to act before lives are lost.

How We’re Solving It

Modern vehicle technologies, such as Electronic Braking Systems (EBS) and Roll Stability Systems (RSS), have unlocked the potential to collect and analyse near-miss data—critical moments where rollovers almost occurred.

This initiative builds on that foundation by activating data-sharing capabilities from existing RSS installations in partnership with transport operators, telematics service providers, and brake suppliers.

This data-sharing approach gives fleet operators and road managers real-time visibility into near-miss events and their locations. The insights gained enable targeted solutions to:

By identifying near-miss patterns, we are creating safer roads, smarter drivers, and stronger fleets—working together to eliminate rollovers from Australia’s roads.
